Composed for a wind ensemble concert band, Grand Diurnal takes the approach of representing the day cycle as a grand symphonic work. The players and audience are taken through a musical journey that uses a wide range of musical expression and literature. We start at dawn and go through day, afternoon, dusk, midnight, and end at dawn, starting the cycle back again. The piece uses varying tempos, time signatures, fluent transitions, and recurring leitmotifs. Grand Diurnal is a Grade 5 piece and is the first work published by American composer Roman Goreth.
