Product Description

This tune is an example of a tune from a musical Three-Penny-Opera, which was, in turn, is based on an earlier work entitled the Beggar's Opera. It is the main tune of the former, being sung and played by an street organ grinder at the beginning and conclusion. It fictionalizes the story of Captain Macheath (an infamous highwayman robber) as he has been portrayed through the years in various dramatic and literary works. It appears here as a piano solo with chord symbols and two verses of text in the event that the player would like to sing along while playing. There are many piano jazz idioms presented here 1) stride bass 2) mild 6,7, and 9th chords, 3) standard "fills" that can be added to other jazz pieces that are similar in style. This tune has been recorded by several performers including Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong and Lyle Lovett and is now an established standard in the jazz/pop repertoire.
