"A Salty Dog" is a song originally by the English rock band Procol Harum. The lyrics of the song were written by Keith Reid and the music was written by Gary Brooker when he was on tour in Switzerland. Gary Brooker tells in one of his videos that he sat there in the studio in front of the keyboard and struck only one chord (C#, F and G). This chord is based on a tritone interval from C# to g and sounds somehow mystical. Brooker was inspired by this chord, which is also the first chord of the song. Brooker composed a beautiful chord progression based on it. For me, "A Salty Dog" is definitely one of Procol Harum's best songs, next to "Whiter shade of pale". The lyrics by Keith Reid can be interpreted in various ways. I cannot and do not want to give an interpretation or an attempt at an interpretation here. My images in the video are only a visualization of the text as it inspired me. My arrangement of this great song is for symphony orchestra and SATB choir.
