The melody can be traced back to 16th century Italy. It became popular during the Renaissance and was used for many songs in different European countries, most notably by Bedřich Smetana for his symphonic poem "The Moldau" (Vltava).

The lyrics were written by Jewish poet Naftali Herz Imber.

"Hatikvah" is a beautiful, melancholic anthem which expresses the 2,000-year-old desire of the Jewish people to be "a free nation in our land".

Needless to say, it makes for a wonderful piano piece!

About the arranger

Fillipe Mendel has been immersed in music since he was a child. Coming from a Portuguese family, he believes that music can and should tell a story and, as such, he is the composer and arranger of over hundreds of religious, classical and contemporary songs.
