The Shipwreck Waltz (Valse du Naufrage) evokes the story of a sailor who gets trapped inside his cabin during a shipwreck in the middle of the Atlantic ocean. As he faces the final outcome of his life he realizes that his resistance aggravates suffering whilst, letting go, brings him inner peace. Cradled by the ship's movements he enters into a trance and, keeping at all times his calm and serenity, starts dancing a waltz. Like a wave in the ocean, he graciously dances in the eternal presence of its essence and the ill-fated thought of death and extinction is overshined by the experience of oneness.

This piece is based on a broken or asymmetrical waltz accompaniment pattern in 11/4 on top of which, a series of elegant melodies thrive to culminate, after overcoming many difficulties, in the consummation of oneness with the ocean.
