Plumptre was a 19th century minister, poet, scholar, and hymnist from England. Messiter was a 19th century organist, editor, and hymnist from England who eventually moved the the US. Sections A and C are the verse. Sections B and D are the refrain. A modulation to a new key occurs towards the end of section B with the help of a French augmented sixth chord. A descant by yours truly is then added at section C. This section should be played "più maestoso" or more majectically.
