Hildegard von Bingen was a polymath - an abbess, a writer, a theologian, a poet, a botanist and a composer. She wrote about 70 musical works, mostly antiphons, hymns and sequences. This hymn, Ave Generosa, is one of her most beautiful compositions, with elegant construction of the phrases and a distinctive melody souring to the top of the register at the climax of each verse.
