Product Description

The First Station of The Cross, Jesus is Condemned for solo piano is the first movement of a prayerful devotion on The Stations of the Cross, referring to the Passion and death of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The music is characterized by recurring themes that appears in other movements of the entire piano cycle of 15 pieces or movements.

The Theme of the Heartbeat, a constant repeated note which is initially accompanied by simple chords, setting the mood for the condemnation. The heartbeat symbolizes the silent fear and reality of being condemned. The Theme of Condemnation is also presented which is a sequence of notes falling chromatically. Both themes represent the hurt of condemning and of being condemned.

The scribes on all the people shove
And bawl allegiance to the state,
But they who love the greater love
Lay down their life; they do not hate (Wilfred Owen)
