Only a handful of works survive from this most enigmatic of British composers; known to have studied piano and composition with Granville Bantock in the early 1920s, Lilian Elkington's career as a composer and musician was cut short once she married and most her manuscripts lost. 'Out of the Mist' was miraculously discovered (along with a few other pieces) by musicologist David Brown in a second-hand bookshop in Worthing and he has helped bring about many modern day performances worldwide, further increasing Elkington's visibility. These words are taken from the original programme notes by H. Orsmond Anderton: "When the 'Unknown Warrior' was brought home to his last resting-place there was a thick mist over the English Channel, out of which the warship slowly emerged as she drew near to Dover. This explanation of the title will give the clue to the understanding of the music. The opening is quiet and the melancholy phrases enlarge as the ship creeps onward with her fateful burden. After a pause, the air grows brighter, and the deep gloom is somewhat relieved, though the tension is still strong. Gradually the style enlarges and the agitation of the soul reasserts itself, broadens, and leads to the final section, Largamente appassionata, as with a burst of sad exaltation the representative of the nameless thousands who have died in the common cause is brought out of the darkness to his own. Arranged as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide concert band repertoire.
