This song was composed in a Celtic/Irish idiom set to a text by the Irish revolutionary and Gaelic scholar Pádraig Pearse. He was executed by the British authorities in Dublin in 1916 after he led a rebellion against British rule. The text is sung as a lullaby to the woman caught in adultery where Jesus Christ not only refuses to condemn her, but invites her to a life with more meaning and purpose, one which gives her freedom from the slavery of her passions. The song is meant to be sung freely, and ornamentation is welcomed by the singer to maintain the Irish style.
