Product Description

A single movement piece for double reed ensemble based on the Spanish dance form.

Written for the Double Reed Ensemble at Texas Tech University (Susetta Rockett, director)

There are three basic characters in the piece - the matador, the cape, and the crowd.

The opening bassoon solo and subsequent chorale represent the matador, alone and thoughtful, preparing for the event. This theme then takes on a more rhythmic, march-like, and forward-moving mood, as if the matador is moving toward the arena. The matador prepares, spending time with his cape. (This is a contrapuntal duet between Oboe and English Horn. All the 16th-note passages in the piece represent the movement of the cape.)

The focus then turns to the crowd. This section begins with strong rhythmic stomping and clapping. The themes/characters begin to overlap and a type of fiesta happens.

We hear the traditional bullfight fanfare and the anticipation builds. We hear the flurry of the cape, rhythmic jabs of the matador, and the stomps and claps from the crowd as it all builds to a climax.

With the confrontation concluded, the matador reflects for a few moments before the celebration/fiesta begins. The piece ends with a musical ¡OLÉ!
