Christina Rosetti wrote the poem in 1849 at the age of 19; it may seem sad to be
contemplating ones own demise so early in life but in Victorian Britain death at that age was
not so unusual. The poem expresses two things: there is the firm wish that her loved one
should remember her, permanently but not to an excessive degree; he should not feel guilty
if he forgets her - for a while.
The poem is scored here for mezzo-soprano but it is not strictly gender-specific and
could be sung, an octave lower, by a baritone. The keyboard can be a piano, an electronic
keyboard, preferably using a non-percussive voice or a synth.
The music comes with two copies of the full score, with both voice and keyboard
parts.
