Sendai, Op. 156, for brass quintet was started 5 Apr 2024 and completed 30 May 2024. It was originally intended to be a short composition to accompany some time lapse footage that I captured in the Sendai region in Japan, north of Tokyo. The compositional process expanded the work well beyond the combined videos duration. Despite some of my somber experiences observing the aftermath of the 2011 tsunami, the regions resilience surpasses the mourning. This work reflects the upbeat optimism so prevalent in the area.
