Laura Nyro wrote this song and sold it to Peter, Paul and Mary, who recorded their version before Nyro recorded hers, neither of which made much impact. But when Blood, Sweat & Tears released their version in 1968, it shot up to No. 2 on the singles chart, beaten for the top spot by the Beatles' "Come Together/Something."
