This 1859 Gottschalk piano composition was inspired by a tour of his to Havana, Cuba.
It begins with a doleful section, followed by a contrasting happy dancelike melody.
In this woodwind quintet version, each instrument gets to show off their technical virtuosity.
It is scored for a standard woodwind quintet, but ideally performed with doubles in the oboe (English horn) and Flute (alto flute).
These parts are written with double lines so that the option is there, depending on availability of the doubles.
