This work is an unaccompanied two-part choral setting of the famous poem by Christina Rossetti. It features a 3-verse structure (mirroring the text), with coda. The piece builds up throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a two-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SA choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. Versions for SATB choir, and for solo voice (both unaccompanied), are also available via Sheet Music Plus.
