Duration ca 4'45''. Kids' Song is an original piece, composed and re-arranged for solo alphorn and windband by Des McNutty. The first version was for big band with a solo trumpet part. Most of the part for solo alphorn is not that challenging but the written-out "jazz-funk" solo would need some preparation. The sharps and flats are to indicate harmonic function. There is not expectation that the alphornist can defy nature by placing the notes where they might be found on a piano. Play them where they are! The accompaniment is quite thick and dissonant enough to absorb the "blue" notes that belong to the alphorn's character. An easier solo can be written or improvised to be as difficult as the player dares, or given to another instrument. If needed, the chord sequence in "C" is written over the tuba part in this section. The level for everyone else is on the easier side of intermediate. This arrangement will work without oboe, cor anglais, Eb clarinet, alto clarinet, baritone sax, bassoon and French-horns 3 & 4. Some cues are written if other instruments are missing. A bass clarinet is essential. Kids' Song was written in the mid- 1990s, apparently after listening to a lot of Isaac Hayes as an antidote to the then-ubiquitous Britpop and EDM. The style is a bit commercial and unashamedly schmaltzy - as you might find in a Broadway show from the time. The harmonies are like recently-poured cornflakes; slushy but slightly crunchy in places - and there's a funky middle section, as if you've mashed in a banana with maple syrup and Tabasco on it or something. The sentiment of Kids' Song's lyrics is "We're hungry. Why can't adults just be nice?" Be the first to upload a recording of your band's version! But do let us know when you have... Waaaah!
