Gerhardt was a German 17th Century tutor, theologian, and hymnist. John Wesley and Catherine Winkworth would go on to translate and adopt his work into hymnals for the English speaking world. This piece is to be played with a sence of joy associated with the festive spirit of Christmas and the rememberance of the announcement of good tidings. Section A exposits the hymn. A modulation to a new key accurs a the second ending. This is done with the aid of a French augmented sixth chord. Section B then adds a descant by yours truly.
