I am grateful to Nancy Stone for reaching out and suggesting that I write a new piano piece for her student Vivi as part of Cascadia Composers(NACUSA) In Good Hands 2023. This beloved annual recital pairs up student performers with works by Northwest composers. In talking with Vivi, I learned she was quite drawn to the famous J.S. Bach Prelude in C Major from WTC book 1. In also learning of her favorite color, I was inspired to write something that connected those two perhaps disparate elements in my mind and ear, hence the Prelude in Periwinkle Blue. I also wanted to write some music that was perhaps a bit different than other pieces she has played so the folk flavored, fast and flighty, multi modal Danza Fucshia became the companion piece.
