Edward MacDowell was an American composer and pianist of the Romantic period. He was best known for his second piano concerto and his piano suites Woodland Sketches, Sea Pieces, and New England Idylls.

Woodland Sketches Op.51 includes his most popular short piece, To a Wild Rose.

This "Hunting Song"comes from a set of 12 Etudes Op.39 (12 studies), written in 1890, a particularly happy period in his life when he was busy with teaching and composing commitments and several years before being appointed as professor of music at Columbia University.

Arranged brass quintet: 2 tpt, hn, tbn and tba.

The melody is shared around all of the instruments.
The horn opens the piece with a short fanfare, which is taken up by trumpet.
