Product Description

Many years ago, I asked Joe Diorio in Hawaii how you play with a pianist. I had just joined the Navy Band and was sent to the Pearl Harbor Band, and I was having trouble finding a way to compliment what the pianists was doing. He said, you dont. That leads us to an interesting thing I have found about Pat Martinos rhythm guitar style. I cannot find examples of him comping (accompanying) a pianist or even an organ player other than during organ solos when the organist has their hands full laying down a bass line and soloing. Pianists typically punch chord fills in during their solos so Pat would simply lay out. A while back Pat had a period where he was touring with a pianist and a bass player. This was after his stint with the fantastic organist, Joey DeFrancesco. I used to bug him about going back to the Organ Trio format. He told me, LeRoy, I have to work too hard in that format. What he was calling work was the comping he felt was necessary during organ solos because there usually isnt an underlying chord for the reason stated above. This book is an attempt to document his comping during those organ solos.
