From the Foreword:
Why Christmas in Dettelbach?
Since 1989, Ive had the pleasure of living in a historic house in the old town centre of Dettelbach in Lower Franconia in Germany. Small as it is, Dettelbach complete with medieval encircling fortified wall, Gothic parish church, late Gothic Town Hall, Pilgrimage church, and many half-timbered houses has officially been a town since 1484. A very picturesque place!
When my children were growing up, we had Song Time at the piano every evening after dinner. During Advent, wed sing innumerable English and German carols. This little collection of 12 carols, half English, half German, is just a tiny fraction of our favourites as not all dear old Christmas carols lend themselves to a contemporary treatment.
The main challenge here was to make the arrangements as simple, but as lyrical and contemporary as possible, with my piano students in mind, who are generally bored with standard arrangements of all-too-familiar Christmas songs.
