The national anthem of Armenia was composed by Barsegh Kanachyan (Բարսեղ Կանաչեան), with lyrics by Mikayel Nalbandian (Միքայել Նալբանդյան). Titled "Our Fatherland" (Mer Hayrenik / Մեր Հայրենիք), it became the national anthem of the First Republic of Armenia in 1918. However, the song was forbidden in the following years when the First Republic was invaded by the Soviet Union and became the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. When Armenia became independent again in 1991, "Mer Hayrenik" was re-adopted as the national anthem.
