Product Description

"Ipa" is a poem written by Vito Apshana, a native Colombian and a member of the Wayuu people, an aborigine civilization from northern Colombia. The poem's central subject is the rock, not merely as an object (as we tend to perceive it in the industrialized world) but as a live witness of our ancestors in planet Earth. Ipa, just like all the poems and prayers that come from Amerindian cultures, is an ode to Nature and, thus, an ode to God. When I set this beautiful poem to music, I decided to convey the Amerindian world using the modal and pentatonic scales that are so prevalent in their music. However, since I am in no way truly connected to Amerindian culture, this piece is still a reflection of a western man's perspective of the aborigines. Argentinian composer Alberto Ginastera would have called this work an experiment in Subjective Nationalism, that is, music that reflects foreign cultures using Western imagination and, thus, a primarily Western musical language. Ipa, then, is my personal homage to a rich, indigenous culture that still today breathes nature and magic in its own unique conception of the world. - Alexander Klein
