Product Description

Single-movement work for 10 musicians. The Spirits of Cahuachi draws its inspiration from Anna Gruszczyńska-Ziółkowska's remarkable study Behind the Silence: Music in the Nasca Culture, which chronicles the 1994 archaeological discovery of several clay antaras (Andean pan flutes) in a temple at Cahuachi, the political and cultural heart of the ancient Nasca civilization. Dr. Gruszczyńska-Ziółkowska's meticulous analysis of these artifacts revealed the precise tones each clay tube could produce, documented in detailed tables within her book. This composition transforms those ancient pitchestranslated into their approximate equivalents within our modern tuning systeminto contemporary musical language. The historical tones are treated as raw material for diverse compositional approaches: sometimes forming chords, sometimes generating scales, occasionally functioning as pitch-class sets that are fragmented and then layered in overlapping patterns. The composition makes no attempt to reconstruct or imitate ancient Nasca music, for such music remains unknowable to us. Nothing of their musical practice survived except these tones themselvesthese "spirits" preserved within the clay pipes of the Cahuachi antaras, waiting across centuries to speak again through contemporary musical expression.
