Product Description
This solo begins with a slow section that is mesmerising and faintly sinister in its measured progress, dissonance and harmony. The soloist must produce a sustained tone and volume in long notes with occasional cadenza-like runs. The second section is rapid and rhythmic, and the soloist is required to produce a consistently rich tone over a large range and to play punchily or sweetly at times - demonstrating all the versatility of the instrument.
The story behind this piece is that I originally wrote it as a teenager for a friend who played clarinet. When I came across it again recently, I liked (and largely kept) the first section but wrote a new improved second section tailored to the Euphonium.
I think it is a fun piece to play, with its variety and reasonable degree of challenge and I encourage Euphonium players to get their teeth into it! It should be reasonably suitable for other Bb instruments, though good luck on the trombone!
