Joaquín Garisuain (1751-1810), was an excellent bassoonist, he was active in the Monastery of
the Descalzas Reales, Royal Chapel, Royal Chamber and in the service of the Duchess of Osuna.
There are other works of his in the Monastery of El Escorial.
The Bassoon Sonata is a work composed for the bassoon opposition of the Royal Chapel in
1780. On the cover is "Sonata de Fagot/ escrita para la oposición/de la R. Capilla/De S.M.C./Por
Dn. Joaqn. Garisuain/individuo de dch R. Cap./Año 1780".
The original manuscript is composed to be played with bassoon and violin. The editor has
chosen the option of carrying out a harmonized accompaniment to facilitate its interpretation
and dissemination in professional and academic fields. In this way it can be interpreted (its
interpretation is proposed) both as a duet (with bassoon or cello accompaniment) or as a
sonata in two movements (with piano or harpsichord accompaniment).
