Raoul's Rescue Mission, for narrator and orchestra

"Raoul's Rescue mission" is a work for narrator and orchestra, based on my children book with the same title. The speaker in the recording is Richard Schletty who did a wonderful job! For more information about Richard, visit his webpage at www.schlettysound.com

All the music in the score is developed from the scores intro and the intro itself has been taken from the slow movement of my first piano sonata which, in its turn, was dedicated to the person for whom the children-book was written for in the first place (yes, I know its complicated).

For example, a single fragment (also called a motive) could have being used to develop a completely new melody for one of the characters or serve as accompaniment of a melody or to set the mood of a scene. This means that all the different character melodies are related to each other. Now isnt that one happy family!

Each character in the story is being represented by an instrument or instrument combination, but its not a strict rule. Depending on the dramatic situation a character is in, another instrument could take over his role for a short moment. Basically however, we could say that:

Raoul (the hero, a little mouse) is represented by the clarinet.

BabySis (Raoul's baby sister) is represented by the oboe.
Sewer (a sewerrat, Raoul's friend) is represented by the trombone.
Mother (Raoul's mother) is represented by the oboe, but when shes upset (which is most of the time), the trumpet takes its place.
TomCat (the enemy, a large cat) is represented by the horns.
ComeOn (a large black bird, Raoul's friend) is represented by the flute.

The score - Instrumentation

The score has been written with a small ensemble in mind. The idea was to create a piece intimate in sound and with the possibility to be performed by smaller orchestras in for example music schools, public schools etc. The number between the brackets in the string section show the number of players.
