I have been writing a series of preludes/postludes for standard
brass quintet (two trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba), specifically for use in
opening and closing church services.
Theyre relatively short, as fits this purpose. There are several of them, all available on
sheetmusicplus.com, and each with a different mood. For most, the Prelude is somewhat
contemplative, inviting the attendees into worship. Most of the Postludes emphasize a joyous or
peaceful sending into the world.
Pre/Post #1 was originally written for a Pentecost
service. Prelude #1 starts with a
trumpet duet and is stately and dramatic (and the tuba gets the melody
briefly!-can you tell Im a tuba player?), with a line that, like the tongues
of fire, touches each instrument; and Postlude #1 is joyous and uplifting, with
some early-Baroque twists in the harmonization and the meter change at the end
(the original thought was the chord twists and meter changes were faintly
evocative of speaking in tongues). This piece could be played by a student group; it is not especially difficult, but some of the meter and chord changes would be more suited to an upper-level student group. Please feel free to contact me! michael.ropp@ieee.org.
