Product Description

By Mike Strand, ASCAP

This sonata is in the style of Ludwig von Beethoven, whom this composer has studied and greatly admires.

The audio sample is taken from Movement 3:  The end of variation 2, all of variation 3 (rock), and the beginning of variation 4 (rag).

Movement 1

This is the result of my experimenting with the first movement of Beethovens piano sonata no. 23 op. 57. The Beethoven sonatas overarching tonality based on F minor evokes a mood of darkness and despair. I used the time signature 4-4 instead of Beethovens 12-8, and my sonata introduces a new set of themes and motifs with tonality F major. These modifications posed interesting problems in figuration and modulation and changed the mood of the piece.

Movement 2

This is a slow movement that might be characterized as minimalistic. The player should accentuate the right-hand octaves corresponding to the gradually unfolding melody.

Movement 3

This is a theme with five variations, among which are rock, rag, and swing.
