Shadow Puppets is the second movement of my first string quartet. My inspiration came from watching a video of a shadow puppet show presented in Indonesia. The puppets irregular and sudden movements inspired me to use the pizzicato and arco staccato sounds of the string quartet.
The music is essentially a playful fugue with the second violin stating the main subject in imitation and which recurs frequently in the course of the work. I used a lot of different time signatures to mimic the irregular movements of the puppets.
The fabric of the string quartet is based on my studies of the Bartok quartets with my composition teacher in NYC, Hall Overton.
