Product Description

Rounds are powerful little pieces of music. A bit like whipped cream in a can that starts out neat and small and expands with the press of a button into delicious swirls, rounds are the ultimate thrifty musical package.

Rounds are also versatile. A good round can be played by a varying number of different instruments. You don't need the world's greatest string quartet, or a crack symphony orchestra. Any old (or young) group of miscellaneous instrumentalists will do. This is why rounds are perfect for school groups and why I have chosen to write a whole new bunch that will thrill young musicians, their teachers and audiences everywhere.
While classics such as Row Row Row Your Boat, Three Blind Mice and Frere Jacques have served music teachers and children well, I thought it was time to expand the repertoire as well as musical vocabulary. In doing so I have reflected on the last hundred or so years of musical techniques, including a number of compositional devices and styles into these pieces. For the most part, these are pretty tame. A handful of pieces push the usual nursery rhyme aesthetic of rounds by using such musical devices as the octatonic and wholetone scales and ambiguous tonality, but these are by no means extreme.
A big thanks goes to my ten year old daughter, Mika, who did the illustrations and titled many of the pieces.
