Henry Francis Lyte composed the lyrics to the hymn "Abide with Me" using the "Eventide" melody composed by William H. Monk. The hymn is a prayer for God to remain present with us through all of life, including death. The title refers to the disciples' response to Jesus when they said (Luke 24:29), "Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent."
