The Air, as presented here, is in the original key of D major. I would not recommend the violinist try to play the melody entirely on the G string - that feat is best attempted in August Wilhelmj's version of 1871, where he takes the melody down an octave plus a major second to reset the piece in C major, thereby making his indication, AIR ON A G STRING, appropriate for this beautiful music.
