Background:
To The Challenges We Face was originally created during the Go Compose Online! North America May 2020 pilot workshop. This workshop, aimed toward youth, took a select number of applicants from all around North America and provided them individual tutoring with well-established composers, theory professors, and musicians during the Covid-19 pandemic and its associated shutdown of society. The workshop was centered around the theme "Encoded Composition," where the music written portrayed some sort of hidden meaning, either illustrated through the music or through the individual notes composed on staff paper. All the pieces created during the workshop were performed by professional musicians (including solo instrumentation for piano, viola, unpitched percussion, and pitched percussion). In all, there were applicants from around North America, including the United States, Canada, and El Salvador.
