Mamă, de-ai fi o stea
de Grigore Vieru
Mamă, de-ai fi o stea-n cer lină,
Te-aș găsi după lumină,
Rostire-aș spre fața ta:
Când dormi, maică, dumneata?
De te-ai face spic secară,
Te-aș găsi după povară
Și te-aș întreba tot eu:
Nu ți-i, măiculiță, greu?!
De-ai fi-n codru-o păsăruică,
După glas afla-te-aș, muică,
Zice-aș ud de roua ta:
Ce dor ai de cânți așa?!
De te-ai face-n văi o floare,
Te-aș găsi după suflare,
Spune-ți-aș vorbe cerești:
Maică, tot frumoasă ești !

LYRICS IN ENGLISH (a gross translation):
Mother, if you were a smooth star in the sky,
I would find you by the light,
I would say to your face:
"When are you sleeping, mother?"
If you made yourself a spike of rye,
I would find you by your burden
And I would also ask you:
"Isnt it hard for you?!"
If you were a bird in the woods,
I would find you by your voice, mum,
I would say, wet from your dew:
"What sorrow makes you sing like that?!"
If you were a flower in the valleys,
I would find you by your breath,
And Ill tell you my heavenly words:
"Mother, you are still beautiful!"
