There is confusion as to who is the exact composer of this melody. Perhaps it was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656), or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The first published version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar of plainchant so he is often given credit as its composer.

This trio can be performed as is or with the matching Duet version. In Harp I both hands play the melody. Harp II has melody and some accompaniment. Harp III has accompaniment and the most notes.
