Superficially, At the Riverside appears to be a piece for beginning trumpet players, but it's not. The slow tempo and long phrases make it too difficult for beginners' endurance.

At the Riverside is meant to portray a peaceful setting, sitting in contemplation on a river's edge, as the water moves slowly by. It is not a performance piece as much as it is an incidental piece. I wouldn't suggest scheduling this on a recital or public concert. It works better as prelude music for a church service.

With the river theme, it would also work very well as a prelude to baptism.
