Her new home is an unhappy one, as Mary's uncle, Archibald, is still mourning the death of his wife. Mary finds a garden that is locked and learns that it had once belonged to Archibald's wife. The garden has been locked since her death. Mary asks her uncle if she can plant a garden of her own. This is the song that Archibald sings after Mary asks him for a bit of earth.
