"The Thing" is a novelty song written by Charles Randolph Grean and recorded by Phil Harris. The tune is remeniscent of an old english folk tune called "The Lincolnshire Poacher" though this song more closely resembles the bawdier version of the tune: "The Chandler's Wife."

At various points in December of 1955, this song was #1 on Billboard's Best Sellers in Stores, Most Played by Jockeys, and Most Played on Jukeboxes.

Ray Charles also covered this song on his 1964 album: Have a Smile With Me.
