Product Description

Sinfin, composed in January-February 2000, was the third in a series of works for woodwind instruments and vibraphone responding to the powerful imagery of the great rose windows of Chartres Cathedral. It reflects upon the south rose, a bright Apocalypse vision, showing the Deity surrounded by eight censing angels, the four beasts of the Apocalypse and by twenty-four musicians (actually Elders of the Apocalypse) bearing a variety of mediaeval instruments.

The number seven is of great significance in Apocalypse prophecies, and likewise in the architecture of Chartres Cathedral. Consequently, Sinfin is formed of seven sections, creating a complete cycle, evolving from a sequence of forty-nine mirror chords which, in the manner of a passacaglia, provide the harmonic structure for all that follows. The music develops onward through passages of plainchant and increasingly dance-like cycles to a return, at the main climax, of the chord sequence and opening material. This version, Sinfin 2, was commissioned by Miguel Bernat of Duo Contemporain for the great Portuguese percussion ensemble Drumming. A version for vibraphone duo, Sinfin Parados, was made in 2002.
