Product Description
Francis Henry Burgess (18791948) was a British organist, composer, and Anglican priest renowned for his advocacy of plainsong in church music. Burgess edited and composed numerous liturgical works, including The English Gradual, The Plainchant Gradual, and faux-bourdon settings of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis using Gregorian tones. His publications aimed to make traditional chant accessible to parish choirs and included adaptations of Sarum and Roman rites. Later in life, he trained for the priesthood and served in several parishes before his death in 1948.
