We Will Remember Them - Tim McVittie

An Anthem for Remembrance.

This atmospheric anthem, based on words from Robert Laurence Binyon's poem "For the Fallen" is perfect for Remembrance services. It starts and finishes with a small group who should be placed a distance from the choir and congregation / audience if possible, singing a haunting "We will remember them" that hints at the Last Post with it's open 5ths.

Although it is a 2-part anthem it is often in unison for the full choir, with the harmony appearing at key moments, to reflect the words.

The ostinato like rhythmic pattern in the accompaniment, which works well on both piano or organ, provides a bed for the bel canto style melody.

The piece is dedicated to young singers whose parents are in the armed forces and the piece works well with younger voices.

This can be heard through the live recording which was taken from one of our Remembrance Services.

Words:
As the stars that shall be bright when we are young
Moving in marches along the dusty plain.
As the stars that are strong in the time of our darkness
To the end they remain.

They shall grow not old
as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them
nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun
and in the morning.
We will remember them.
