Composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto for the soundtrack of the film Furyo (Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence, 1983), a cinematic work directed by Ōshima Nagisa and set in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War, the piece presented here has been the subject of an accurate chamber transcription for strings and piano. The arrangement preserves the essence of the original writing, while offering new timbral perspectives: the score lends itself equally well to performance with solo strings or with a larger string orchestra, without altering its formal coherence or expressive effectiveness. The contrapuntal dialogue between piano and stringsbuilt upon a skilful alternation of harmonic support and thematic prominenceamplifies the evocative power of the main melody. The whole creates a sonic landscape imbued with contemplative refinement, in which the colours and spiritual depth of Japanese musical tradition emerge, reinterpreted through a contemporary compositional sensitivity, and intimately intertwined with the emotional and dramatic dimension of the film.
