My first string quartet was not originally about a volcano. I started with a very basic melody and chord progression and a low, rumbling section at the beginning, but as I was listening to these two ideas, I thought about a book series I was re-reading at the time called Wings of Fire, whose fourth book features a volcanic eruption. I thought that the two sections I already had were reminiscent of the tremors and initial eruption of the volcano. This piece is one long movement that is divided into 16 smaller sections that tell the story of two volcanic eruptions and the rise and fall of a civilization.
