Product Description
Blbuli Hid (With The Nightingale) is a song of unrequited love composed by the 18th century poet and musician Harutyun Sayatyan. Known as Sayat-Nova (1712-1795), he was a court musician and poet in the kingdom of Georgia. Ultimately, he was a traveling troubadour (ashugh) in the South Caucasus, singing while playing instruments such as the 3-stringed kamancha. The lyrics from his hundreds of songs reflect the Armenian culture, its history and religion, natures wonders, and themes of love, in several languages (Armenian, Georgian, Persian).
In this setting for piano solo, the form consists of two sections where the slower opening gives way to a more lively tempo. A brief modulation is added, serving as a transition and ushering in a contemporary harmonization.
The lyrics are summarized by Charles Dowsett in his 1997 biographical and literary venture, Sayat- Nova: An 18th-Century Troubadour available on archive.org. Interestingly, Sayat Nova uses imagery with the colors red and black to contrast with the Blbul, of the Robin species.
