Clean Blue Sky is a three minute work for concert band. I wanted to write something for students that would musically represent the build up and removal of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. I decided to use additive chord tones (7ths, 9ths, 11ths, and 13ths) to create tension and to build thicker textures analogous to the build up of atmospheric pollutants.
Pedagogically, opportunities for teaching different balance situations exist with sections balanced using standard McBeth pyramid dynamics and short sections of white noise dynamics. The piece begins with a standard 3-pitch major chord in Bb Major and ends with the open, clean interval of a Perfect 5th (Bb/F). Ranges are all within intermediate levels with doublings throughout.
Ultimately though, the piece is melodic, lyrical and hopeful.
