Most of the time, I try to write music that offers enough of a challenge to be interesting for the musicians while being accessible enough for general audiences to enjoy. I approached this quintet with the goal of doing something a little less conventional without going overboard and writing "noise." The result may not be accessible to all audiences, but would probably work for a university recital where most of the audience are also musicians.

The parts are very independent throughout most of the piece and will require close attention; individually, the parts are hard to count, and collectively it's not easy to put the ensemble together. If you're looking for material that provides those challenges, this could be a good choice.

This quintet for 2 trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba comprises three movements and clocks in at 10:25.

(The synthesized mp3 doesn't capture the stopped horn quarter-tones in the second movement; when played by humans, that bit doesn't sound quite so much like a clown squeezing his rubber nose.)
