Product Description
Originally composed for an 11-piece Latin Band, Suite Rumbas bigger brother is full of traditional and contemporary Latin styles, plus a distinctive jazz composition style.
Suite Rumba has three movements, which are 1. Rumba Riff, a bluesy chord sequence combined with more traditional montuno and vibrant 3-2 rumba clave rhythms and saxophone figures; Bolero, a poignant slow dance led by a trombone solo; finally, Mixed-up Rumba, driven by a fast and relentless montuno, 2-3 rumba clave and featuring the whole trumpet section.
The whole suite is a workout for the rhythm section, especially for the piano player. A second hand percussionist is recommended. Trumpets, as you might expect, feature throughout but with enough breaks and low playing to pace themselves. Trombones are particularly rhythmic in movements one and three. Saxophones provide color, melodies and solos in the outer movements and warmth in the middle movement.
The big band version here was developed by Colorado Jazz Workshop, led by Hugh Ragin. This is a difficult, but rewarding piece to play!
